LAYTON -- Layton is among finalists competing in the All-America City Award program. Mayor Stephen Curtis says Layton has been selected by the National Civic League as one of 34 finalist communities for the 2006 program. The National Civic League is a non-profit, nonpartisan or-ganization founded in 1894 to strengthen citizen democracy by transforming democratic institutions. This is the 57th year the award has been given to recognize communities where citizens work together and achieve uncommon results.

To be named an All-America City, a community must be able to demonstrate successful resolution of city issues through collaborative effort. Award-winning criteria include citizen involvement, government performance, philanthropic and volunteer resources, capacity for cooperation and consensus, inter-group relations, community information sharing, and intercommunity cooperation.

In 1997 the League required All-America Cities to demonstrate youth enrichment as well.

Layton operates programs including youth court and youth city council, as well as the community action council.

City representatives will travel to Anaheim, Calif., to present the city's application and answer questions on June 11. Ten cities will then be awarded the honor at a special ceremony.
