FARMINGTON -- The Senior Companion Program, which aims to help senior citizens stay in their own homes as long as possible, is expanding. Five new positions have been created, and staff sought, to handle increased needs. Senior companions are healthy older adults who assist other adults to live independently by helping with daily tasks and providing en-couragement to remain active.

"The service these companions provide is priceless," says Shawna Mahan, In-Home Services Bureau manager with the Davis County Health Department. "They are a vital part of our outreach to keep older adults independent in their homes."

Senior companions receive a small stipend for those who qualify. They must be at least 60 years old, have an income of $1,352 a month for a single household or $1,812 for a two-person household. Companions will be asked to assist other senior citizens 20 to 40 hours a week.

Those hired will also receive pre-service and on-going training, an annual physical examination, supplemental insurance, and help with meal and transportation costs.

"This program is a win-win situation for our community," says Health Director Lewis Garrett. "Through the help of the senior companion program, many of our local seniors may be able to avoid institutionalized care and maintain active and healthier lifestyles."

Davis County's senior companion program is coordinated by Weber Senior Services. For more information on how to apply as a senior companion, call 1-800-209-2503.
