DAVIS COUNTY -- The Northern Utah Business and Economic Summit (NUBES) saw a large turnout over the nine-hours-long series of discussions. "This has been a huge success for us in the past," said John Pitt, President of the Davis Chamber of Commerce. "We've had a lot of people come in and out over the day's sessions. This has been a great summit."

Among many of the forums were the state of Utah's overall economy, an aerospace composite cluster, the Davis County Economic Development plan, as well as the newly formulated SEED program, which covers Davis, Morgan, and Weber Counties and assists with startup entrepreneurs in assisting them with getting their ideas off the ground.

"The SEED program is the most recent start up program we developed in order to further assist entrepreneurs," said Craig Bott, who works with the SEED program and is a part of the Davis County Economic Development center. "We've been very successful in such a short amount of time."

Nationally noted Economist Jeff Thredgold headed the luncheon, speaking about the economy in Davis County and Utah, as well as comparing them to other regions and the United States as a whole.

"(Davis County) has one of the best economic standings in the state right now," said Thredgold. "Their business growth has been increasing at a large rate over the years.

"Utah is no different. Compared to the rest of the country, the state has done so well that people can't help but flock to the state where job growth and creation are increasing everyday."

He warns, however, that the economy isn't at its best, and that a slight "recession" has taken place within the state because job growth is only increasing by a small percentage.

"We're still one of the best states for job growth," said Thredgold. "I believe we are in a state of recession, but it's nothing to panic about."

Other discussions included how to get a start-up business off the ground, the real estate market in Davis County, as well as a strategy for stronger economic growth.

"This is one of the largest turnouts we've seen from local and business leaders in the area," said Pitt. "With the success we've seen from this summit, I'm looking forward to putting together other summits in the future.
