Visitors are met at the front desk by professional hosts who request what activity is of interest for that day. They will do their best to make you feel that this is a place you want to be on any given day. Now that you have been welcomed the choices will be many as to just how you want to spend your exercise time.
Before you even get to the front desk, however, you notice the day- care facilities. This is a Utah State licensed and regulated facility, having to meet all the regulations and codes of the state. The only stipulation, according to Starr Duncan, is that you cannot just drop the children off and leave and you can only leave them for two hours. Everything in the daycare center from the caretakers to the bathroom facilities is for children. The toilets and sinks are even at toddler level. Ange Sellers and Starr are both required to take 10 hours per year in childcare management. In addition they have also taken classes in child development at the college level.
Now that those youngsters are taken care of it's time to get dressed for the pool or the gym. This is another unique area that the parents should appreciate. There are locker rooms strictly for the family where dad or mom can take a son or daughter, usually young-er pre-teens who are not used to large public facilities, and not have them dressing with the older adults.
According to Gary Cohen, director of the center, these are just a few of the things found in our research that people are concerned about. Cohen, who has many years of experience in the recreation field said the city contracted with a Denver firm to help with the design and just what people expect in recreation facilities.
To the east of the main foyer are two large gymnasiums. One will be used during the school day in conjunction with North Davis Junior High School. The other is open for public use. These are large facilities and can accommodate many people. A divider for the two floors insures users will not be interrupting each other. When school is not in session the gyms will be open to the public.
Upstairs are the exercise rooms and the workout areas. Many classes can be accommodated at the same time. Many are free for the price of admission. According to Cohen, yoga, kick boxing and other classes will be available to the public.
A local businessman paid for one of the exercise rooms to be finished. Moving on upstairs to the exercise machines, Cohen says they are "state of the art." Pam and Gary Conrad who were getting their introduction to the latest in treadmills said they are "just neat." This area has a fan that blows air on users as they heat up; they can watch TV and hear the audio on their own headsets.
Now comes the whole reason for the new Aquatic Center. The pool areas -- and yes that is plural. There are two pools and one giant hot tub.
The hot tub can accommodate up to 12 adults. The leisure pool is for the kids or the adults who want to think they are kids. It's a family oriented area with slides, showers of water and a pool just to have fun in. It's decorate in bright reds, greens, blues, and yellows. The openness almost makes you feel as if you are out of doors. The leisure pool also contains a slow current channel for the kids to float in.
The lap pool is nearby. It has six lanes and a diving area also available for school use and contains an area for spectators.
The facilities will be available to rent for parties, birthday get togethers and family reunions. "We don't want to make it so people cannot enjoy it because of cost," Cohen said of the rate structure.
The Clearfield facility is a step into the future and is how the employees of the aquatic center feel. The old pool, which was built in 1957, will come down this month. It served its purpose and the new facility will serve a new generation of swimmers and recreation enthusiasts.
Daily use cost is $5 for adults; family memberships are available. For more information, call 525-2640.
