Bosten Peters, Masen Fenn, and Austin Bankowski celebrate their win.
SALT LAKE CITY — The stage was set for a decisive game between two teams both holding Region 6 best 9-2 records.
The Woods Cross Wildcats honored their seniors before taking on the Olympus Titans in the Region 6 Championship game. However, once the game began it was the whole team that shined.
Backed by the pitching of junior Tyman Weiler, the Wildcats were able to find the right mixture of offense and defense en route to a 12-3 victory over the Titans.
“This is a game that Tyman’s been begging for,” said Woods Cross coach Paul Ayala. “He did a great job.”
With the Titans claiming an early 2-0 lead, the Wildcats responded in the third inning. Masen Fenn blasted a line drive right over the outstretched hand of the second baseman with two outs scoring Aaron Markisich for the first run for their team.
In the fourth inning with two outs Markisich knocked in another two runs with a base hit up the middle giving the Wildcats their first lead of the game.
“Championship teams prevail with two outs,” said Ayala. “We needed runners to come in at the right times and that’s what we did.”
However, following a questionable call by the field umpire, the Titans tied up the score in the fifth inning and put Weiler in a bases loaded jam.
The junior was able to get the next batter to fly out to right field and get out of the inning with only one run scoring.
With the game tied the Titans went to their bullpen and in that moment the scoring floodgates seemed to be released.
With a man on first Austin Bankowski hit a stand up double to the right-center gap scoring Fenn and giving his team a 4-3 lead. Doing his part at the plate as well, Weiler also added a base hit scoring Tyler Parson and putting the Wildcats up by two.
Then came the sixth inning. With a two run lead and two outs the Wildcats circled through their lineup and added seven more runs as the Titans watched the game they were once winning slip away.
Not being able to produce any more runs the Titans watched as the Wildcats celebrated their first Region 6 Championship in school history.
“This was an amazing win for out team,” said Ayala.
“This is a great team, we set out to get the number one seed for the upcoming tournament and that is what we did, let's go get state now.”
