CENTERVILLE – The Viewmont Vikings girls’ soccer team had an opportunity to take sole possession of first place in Region 1 Tuesday.

Instead, they fell to the No. 2 seed after dropping a tough 3-1 match to the Fremont Silver Wolves. The loss gave Fremont the season sweep and the top spot in Region 1 with two games remaining in the regular season.

“We’ve got two region games left, so we have to come out and play hard for those two (games),” said Viewmont assistant coach Missy Dennis. “We want to be able to get on a roll for the state tournament.”

Bailee Hammond scored the Lady Vikings only goal in the first half of play, and the two teams were knotted at 1-1 at the half.

Fremont broke the tie in the 45th minute of play, converting on a corner kick to make the score 2-1. Minutes later, the Silver Wolves made the score 3-1 thanks to a fortunate bounce that went Fremont’s way.

Viewmont had the opportunity to cut into the lead late in the second half when they were awarded a free kick a few yards outside the box. The set piece went unanswered, and the Vikings were held scoreless for the rest of the second half.

“I thought the girls played hard today,” said Dennis. “We pretty much won every 50-50 ball, we just had a couple of lapses. Give Fremont a lot of credit; they’re a good team.”

Both of the Lady Vikings’ losses came against Fremont this season. They’ll face Syracuse at Syracuse High School Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

“I don’t want to look past Syracuse before we get to Northridge,” said Dennis. “Northridge was the one team to beat Fremont this season, so that tells us that we have to be ready to play in each game.”

Dennis is serving as head coach on an interim basis due to Emalee Tate, Viewmont’s head coach, being on maternity leave.
