WOODS CROSS – The beginning of the end of high school sports began in mid-March, and little did some know that history was about to be made in both a good and bad way.
While one multiple defending champion fell, another captured a title for the first time since its coach was a student at the same school.
An exciting regular season in all sports led to an exciting set of playoffs and state meets as teams jockeyed for the best position possible heading into the beginning of May.
The first state titles up for grabs were the boys’ and girls’ track and field championships held on the track of Brigham Young University.
Davis, holding multiple state titles in a row heading in, was the first to fall as neither the boys’ nor the girls’ teams were able to capture a title.
The Woods Cross boys’ team, however, ended up repeating as 4A state champions after strong performances by Cam Dopp, Xequille Harry and countless others.
The same week, the Viewmont boys’ tennis team was ready to defend its 5A state title.
In the end they were able to squeeze by iheir nearest competitor, Brighton, and win their second straight tennis title. The team’s overall effort saw the Tullis brothers of Jake and Sam capture individual titles.
At Bountiful Ridge Golf Course, the Davis Lady Darts golf team was able to bounce back from its second place finish in 2013 by capturing a state title this season.
Davis beat four-time champion Bingham by 16 points and was led individually by Laura Gerner.
Gerner shot an even-par 72 to finish one stroke shy of an individual title.
Back on the baseball diamond the Bountiful Braves were competing for an opportunity to represent Region 6 in the 4A finals after sweeping through the winner’s bracket.
The Braves, led by Parker DePasquale’s seven strikeouts and Ryan Curtis’ four RBI’s in the championship game, were able to capture their first baseball title since 1978 by beating Spanish Fork 6-4.
Then the high school sports season was over. All the champions for the year were crowned and defending those titles will be the goal of each team. August draws closer and closer to yet another exciting season of high school sports.
