BOUNTIFUL — Changes on Main Street have always been a constant for many years in the look of downtown Bountiful.

This black and white photo taken in 1953 shows Bountiful city offices on the left between 200 north and 100 north. The city building was the home to the Bountiful fire department, city offices and a jail, in the rear of the building.

The stairs on the outside lead to the library on the second floor.

Across the street is Hunter’s Ice Cream, a popular hangout for favorite treats for many years.

The Bountiful Tabernacle sits father south. Its spires were blown off in the famous east wind of 1906 and not replaced until 1955

One major difference sixty years later is the mountains to the south. In 1953, there were not too many homes on those hills.

The latest changes on Main Street occurred in 1988 when a major renovation took place.

It included the addition of a beautification approach with flower planters and trees along with customer-friendly sidewalks and lighting. The businesses have changed and, because of the growth of the trees for the past 25 years, many of the business cannot be seen from this aerial shot. Fires and remodeling have also made their mark.

There used to be almost 12 service stations on Main, but most of those have changed to car dealerships now.

In the early days, there was only one bank. Now, Main Street has at least four lending institutions.

Bountiful’s Main Street has taken on the look that many older towns have done by recently by taking  a “mixed use” approach at the same time reserving a certain old historical charm of what Bountiful has been in the past making it an attractive, walkable, shopping and eating place to be.

We encourage the residents to pay a visit to our downtown and bring your family and enjoy some of the new business here that are helping to revitalize Main Street.
