The American Psychological Association has published five tips for graduate students hoping to boost their moods.

“Appreciating the good things in one’s life, not just material things, and cultivating relationships with others are probably the tickets to improved well-being,” said happiness researcher and Harvard School of Public Health research fellow Julia Boehm, as reported by the APA.

1. Record gratitude

List three things your thankful for in a journal or online post every night. Doing this daily for a week boosted happiness for up to six months for people in a 2005 study in “American Psychologist.”

2. Visualize the future

Imagine and write about your ideal self for 15 minutes a week to better grasp what your goals really are and to realize that they are feasible.

3. Be kind to others

Helping others and doing small acts of kindness can significantly improve life satisfaction, according to A 2010 study in the “Journal of Social Psychology.” Spending as little as $5 on a friend boosted happiness immediately and through the end of the day, it found.

4.Get moving

Exercise may boost levels of endorphins and other brain chemicals, and working out has been shown in many studies to improve mood.
