KAYSVILLE – It was a tough, physical girls’ soccer game between Viewmont High School and Davis High School Thursday afternoon at Angel Street Park.
In the end, a 91st minute goal by Bailee Hammond in the second overtime gave the Lady Vikings the 1-0 win over Davis. The win also gave the Lady Vikings the season sweep in their return to Region 1, and kept Viewmont at least one game behind Fremont for first place.
“Every game in this region is so difficult, and to be able to beat Davis both times is a tough task,” said Viewmont coach Emalee Tate. “They took it to us this game and had just as many chances (to score). Give credit to them for giving us a run for our money.”
After a quiet first half from both teams, physical play started to emerge in the second half. Both Davis and Viewmont had their chances to untie the game, but neither was able to find the net. Davis took the first crack at scoring, when a set piece by Mia Stoddard was placed in the scoring area, but missed the shot.
Viewmont had a corner kick in the 53rd minute that went unanswered as well. The kick went into the scoring area, but was kicked out by Davis after a shot attempt by the Lady Vikings.
The Lady Vikings’ final chance to finish the game came in the 75th minute. Viewmont was awarded a free kick from near midfield, but the kick was knocked over the net by Davis goal keeper Sarah Beecher.
“Souli (Phongsavath) does such a good job with his kids; he always has them prepared and ready to go,” said Tate. “They move the ball very well and have a couple of players that can just take over a game at any moment.”
Opening the second overtime period, a battle for the ball caused an injury to Davis’ Maddie Garlock. The possession went to Viewmont, and Montana Tanner took the set piece from midfield. Her kick went into the box, finding Abbie Flandro, who kicked it over to Bailee Hammond for the goal.
“It was a great finish, and a great set piece,” said Tate.
Viewmont’s win was its third in a row after dropping a 1-0 game to Fremont. For Davis, the loss was its second in the last three games.
Viewmont will face Weber at home Tuesday afternoon, and Davis will travel to Syracuse to face the Titans the same day.
Both games kick off at 3:30 p.m.
