WOODS CROSS — The high school sports season will officially be underway Tuesday, Aug. 13.

High schools from around the state are still preparing for upcoming games, but girls’ soccer and 1A baseball will get an early start ahead of both football and volleyball.

Three south Davis County high schools will kick off the soccer season on Tuesday, headlined by the Davis Darts travelling to Woods Cross to face the Wildcats under the lights.

Davis, a 5A semi-finalist in 2012, will be playing the Wildcats for the third consecutive season. The Darts are 2-0 against Woods Cross.

In a slight change to the norm, the game will kick off at 7 p.m.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Woods Cross coach Dave Newman of the time change. “Playing later will give the players a break from the heat. Instead of playing in 90-degree weather, it could be 80 or 75 degrees.”

The Bountiful Braves, a 4A finalist last season, will open this season on the road against Park City. Last season’s match ended in a 1-1 tie, and before that, the two teams met in 2010.

Bountiful won that match 4-1, and coach Lou Plank said its one of the teams he likes having on his schedule for a number of reasons.

“Park City is a good confidence booster for us,” he said. “They’ve been improving every time we’ve played against them, so having them on our preseason schedule is nice.”

Kicking of its season Thursday will be 5A defending champion Viewmont. The Lady Vikings will travel to Woods Cross for their opening game, then head to Brighton on Tuesday, Aug. 20, as part of a three-game road trip to open the season.

Their first home match will be against rival Davis on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Davis School District classes on the traditional calendar begin Monday, Aug. 26.
