NORTH SALT LAKE — South Davis residents concerned with the toxins the medical waste incinerator facility Stericycle emits are signing a petition asking the company to shut down or move.

The petition, on change. org, was started by Farmington resident Alicia Connell. It had more than 90 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon, and grew quickly. The petition is specifically aimed at residents of Foxboro, the neighborhood contiguous to Stericycle, and surrounding areas.

The Utah Department of Air Quality issued a notice of violation to the facility last week for exceeding the limits of dioxin/furan and nitrogen oxide discharged into the air and with failure to report those overages.

The company has until June 14 to submit a plan of action to the state.

But environmentalists are saying it’s time the company shuts its doors in North Salt Lake, saying similar incinerators nationwide have been closed.

“There are better, safer ways to manage hospital waste, so this facility is not producing a needed product or service,” said Dr. Brian Moench, president of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment.

Those signing the petition hail from North Salt Lake, Woods Cross, Centerville and Salt Lake City.

Many cited health issues as reasons for signing and wrote online that the facility is too close to a neighborhood.

“An incinerator should not be in a residential neighborhood,” wrote a woman who identified herself as North Salt Lake resident Natasha Hincks.

Another woman who identified herself online as Salt Lake City resident Dorothy Mendenhall also commented: “I feel this is causing a lot of health problems for the residents of Foxboro subdivision.”
