It’s almost time to start Spring sports, and I, for one, can’t wait for Tuesday afternoon.
Despite the current cold I’m suffering through, the Spring season of high school sports has always gotten me excited.
It’s really a matter of putting on fewer layers of clothing and seeing the first sights of grass that have been covered for the past few months that get me going. The smell of fresh grass combined with the sights and sounds of a baseball or soccer or even a lacrosse game is an opportunity that shouldn’t be passed up by anyone.
As many of our readers know, I’m a huge baseball fan. When the calendar turns from February to March (which will be Friday this year) my first thoughts are of which baseball games I’d like to hit up first before getting into some of the other great high school sports there are to offer.
But about those other sports, let’s take a quick look at what we have coming down the line in the next few weeks. As you’ll read later in this section, many rivalry games are set to start the season as Viewmont and Bountiful will face each other in a couple of sports next week.
The Davis High boys’ soccer team will make its first defense of the 5A title they won last year with a home game against Bountiful.
For the second year in a row, the Darts and Braves will face each other to open the boys’ soccer season, and will give locals an idea of what each team will have heading into a long spring season.
The week will end with a few of the remaining teams taking the field for the first time, with other teams, such as the Braves’ softball team, set to take the field next week.
With other sports such as tennis, track and field, golf, lacrosse and rugby all coming down the calendar this year, it’s going to be a fun ride for those who like to get to the outdoors and enjoy watching their favorite sports. I just hope that I can keep up with it all.
So here’s to a brand new season of Spring sports, and hopefully all the local teams will do well and go deep into the state playoff races.
It should be a fun ride, as usual.
