With snow in the forecast it is definitely time to plan your winter escape. One of the least expensive vacation options is also one of the best values for you. I am talking about taking a cruise to the Mexican Riviera. This makes for a very easy trip with a short 90 minute flight to Los Angeles or San Diego and then a 3-4-7-10 day cruise to sunshine and warm beaches.

I know what you are thinking, you are concerned because of the problem that the Splendor cruise ship had. When you think of it there are about 75 cruise ships sailing every day around the world and you very rarely hear of any problems. Yes this was a serious problem but Carnival is doing it right by refunding all of the money plus giving them a cruise for free. I would get on a cruise ship tomorrow and next month and as often as I possibly could…just ask my wife.

There are the short 3 or 4 day cruises out of Los Angeles that are fun but I would recommend spending just a little more and going on a 7-day cruise down to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. I saw a fantastic price on a 10 day Princess cruise on January 5th that in addition to these stops it goes to Acapulco and Ixtapa for $599 plus taxes. There are great deals on the 7-day cruises too but the closer you get to Spring Break the prices will be going up.

You will love the stops on your Mexican Riviera cruise. In Cabo San Lucas you will see fantastic beaches. In Mazatlan there is fun shopping, good beaches and lots of sunshine. In Puerto Vallarta I loved going on a whale watching excursion where we saw 30-40 whales. I love exploring these towns and looking for bargains on stuff that I don’t really need.

For these cruises that depart and return to the same US port you will only need your original birth certificate, a certified copy of your birth certificate or of course you can use a passport. So you don’t have to go to the expense and time of getting a passport. If you want to drive there is a hotel where you can stay one night and then park your car for free—they take you right over to the pier and pick you up after your cruise. Check out the prices, I am sure you can find a cruise to fit your budget! Don’t get too sunburned!

Travel Tip: Some stores in Mexico are not able to accept large amounts of US dollars so take a credit card into the city with you.

Travel Deals: European river cruises and escorted tours are on sale with excellent prices, some include reduced airfare. There are still a few Christmas and New Year’s cruises to the Caribbean and Panama Canal available at great prices. Book trips for March and April now that is a very busy time.
