How do you get the best prices? For airfare it is usually best to buy as far in advance as you can. The closer it gets to the departure date the more prices will increase. Tickets on the major airlines can be purchased 11 months in advance. Southwest is usually about 6 months in advance. Airlines only allocate a small amount of seats for the lowest prices so plan ahead. The least expensive days to fly are usually Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Compare both non-stop flights and connecting flights—one might be significantly lower than the other.
For cruises you need to be flexible with your dates. There can be a cruise one week that is hundreds of dollars more than the following week. The most popular dates and cruise itineraries need to be booked far in advance because they will sell out. However there so many other cruises that have fantastic last minute deals, usually available about 30-45 days before sailing. At this point sometimes it is hard to find cheap airfare. The cruise line may have some airline tickets available at good prices so have your travel agent check that. The least expensive time of the year to travel is the two weeks after Thanksgiving—when everyone else is focused on Christmas. There are great deals to Hawaii, Mexico, cruises and the Caribbean.
Try to avoid traveling during spring break time in March and April. Prices in January and February will be less expensive. The summertime is usually the most expensive time for Hawaii since kids are out of school, choose fall instead with its great weather and few crowds. Fall is also a great time for Caribbean cruises as well as European cruises. The Alaska cruise season runs from May to September with those two months being the least expensive months. It doesn’t matter where you go, just don’t stay home!
Travel Tip: Always use a travel agent because what may appear like a deal may have some fine print!
