KAYSVILLE – The Davis Darts football team lost its first game of the season Friday night at Davis High School.
Unfortunately, the loss kicked the Darts out of the 5A football playoffs, as the Pleasant Grove Vikings scored three touchdowns with very short field position to claim the 22-15 win.
Pleasant Grove’s second possession of the game turned into a touchdown, thanks to the special teams. After forcing the Darts to punt, the Vikings blocked the punt and recovered the ball on the 19-yard line.
Three plays later, T.J. Wind scored a touchdown from five yards away, giving Pleasant Grove the 7-0 lead.
Another strong defensive effort forced the Darts to punt from deep in their own territory, and granted the Vikings starting field position at the Davis 45-yard line. Six plays later, Wind scored his second touchdown of the night to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead.
Davis didn’t go down without a fight; however, cutting the deficit to seven points after Colton Chronister scored on a nine-yard touchdown run.
The Darts took the lead with 4:47 remaining in the game after going on a 13-play, 80-yard drive. Davis converted on a critical third down play at midfield to keep the drive alive, and then converted on fourth down when Chronister found Abel Porter for an 11-yard touchdown pass.
Chronister threw to the back of the end zone for a two-point conversion and them the lead.
However, the lead was short-lived after Pleasant Grove made a huge return, and then got the benefit of a personal foul from Davis on the same play.
The combination put the Vikings on the Davis 20-yard line to start the drive, and three plays later, Wind scored his third touchdown of the game.
The Vikings converted their own two-point conversion to take a seven-point lead with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
The Darts made a charge down the field in an attempt to tie the game; however, Pleasant Grove forced a turnover on downs with under two minutes left in the game, and ran out the clock to end the game.
Chronister finished the game accounting for both of Davis’ touchdowns. Pleasant Grove took advantage of its short field position by scoring touchdowns on drives of 19, 45, and 20 yards.
Davis ends the season with a 9-1 record, and was 6-0 in Region 1 play.
The Vikings will face the Jordan Beetdiggers, who beat Hunter 56-28 earlier, next Friday at Jordan High School.
