KAYSVILLE — As the baseball season nears the halfway point, some teams are looking forward to next season, and others are competing for the chance to advance to the 4A or 5A playoffs.

In Region 1, the Davis Darts have taken control of the region by posting a 2-0 record through the first few games of region play. The same can be said in Region 6 for Woods Cross Wildcats. The team is 5-0 and has won two of its last three games since coming back from the Lions National Invitational Tournament in Anaheim, Calif.

Not to be undone, however, are both Viewmont and Bountiful in their respective region races. Viewmont, at 2-1 in Region 2 play, sits in a second-place tie with Granger in the region and is only one game behind Taylorsville for the top spot.

Bountiful, which is 3-2, also is tied for second-place in Region 6 with the Cyprus Pirates, and are two games behind the Wildcats for the region lead.

The Darts, winners of 13 of their first 15 games, rode a four-game winning streak heading into Tuesday’s region game with Weber. The Darts have a good combination of offense and pitching that has helped them reach 13 wins. Through Tuesday, the Darts have recorded four shutouts, and offensively have scored 10 or more runs in 12 games.

Woods Cross’ 5-0 record through the first portion of its games has been spread out through the season. The team had to play Highland and Cyprus early in the season before heading to California for the Lions Tournament.

Despite dropping to Stansbury in a non-region game on Saturday, the Wildcats took a pair of games from Clearfield last week to jump into first place in the region. The Wildcats have a pair of games scheduled against rival Bountiful this week.

Bountiful is playing well also, having won three of its first five region games against Clearfield, Highland and East, respectively. The Braves then split the first two of their games against the Leopards and played two games against Woods Cross this week.

The Vikings have played a lot of close games this season on the diamond, dropping games by as few as a single run in five of their nine losses. However, the Vikings early 2-1 region record could prove to be the turnaround the team is looking for in its final season in Region 2.

In its three games against Kearns last week, the Vikings took the series and outscored the Cougars 10-6. Playing a trio of very close games, the Vikings finished the series with a 2-1 victory that saw Brendan Jensen pick up the win in a pitching duel.
