WOODS CROSS — The Davis Darts and Woods Cross Wildcats baseball teams were the only south Davis County high schools to survive last week’s opening rounds of the 4A and 5A State playoffs.
After Monday, however, both were eliminated in their respective brackets. Davis fell 10-0 to Cottonwood and Woods Cross lost 7-2 to Logan.
Viewmont and Bountiful had been eliminated from the postseason the week before, leaving Syracuse and Layton as the only local schools still in the game.
Darts mercy-ruled by Colts, eliminated after loss
Davis’ one and only chance to remain in the 5A baseball playoff bracket ended Monday afternoon after a date with Cottonwood went sour.
The Darts were eliminated from the 5A playoffs after suffering a 10-0 loss to the Colts, who ended the game one inning early due to the mercy rule.
The Darts fell behind from the beginning, allowing three Cottonwood runs in the first inning and two more in the second.
Cottonwood finished the game by scoring three in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.
Hunter Smith, who picked up the win, allowed just five Darts’ hits. Bronson Larsen got the only extra-base hit for Davis, a double.
Wildcats held to two hits, eliminated by Logan
Woods Cross fell behind early and never got into an offensive rhythm Monday.
After collecting just two hits and scoring a pair of late runs, the Region 6 champion Wildcats were eliminated from the postseason in a 7-2 loss.
Chase Nelson of Logan struck out nine Woods Cross hitters en route to his win, and Quentin Foutz took the loss for the Wildcats.
Josh Hunt hit a double for the Wildcats in the loss.
Jordan eliminates Viewmont 8-1
A close game against Jordan last Wednesday turned into a nightmare scenario for the Vikings.
After scratching across a run to cut the deficit to 2-1, the Beetdiggers scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and stopped the Vikings in their tracks.
Brenden Jensen took the loss on the mound, and the Vikings were held to just three hits in the game.
Braves shutout by Royals, eliminated in 4A playoff
The Bountiful Braves were held to just two hits as Roy’s Braxton Patton picked up the win on the road, beating the Braves 6-0 to eliminate Bountiful from the 4A playoffs.
Woods Cross won the Region 6 title for the third straight season, posting a 12-3 Region 6 record and claiming 16 wins overall.
Bountiful finished third with an 8-7 region mark and 12 wins overall, and Viewmont won 10 Region 2 games and had 12 wins overall.
Davis finished 7-3 in Region 1, only one game behind Layton and Syracuse. The Darts finished one game shy of 20 wins.
