Last Thursday and Friday, both teams moved one step closer to claiming an unbeaten region record, as the Braves took down Woods Cross 56-45 Thursday and the Vikings beat Taylorsville 64-42 Friday night.
Meanwhile, the Davis Darts were able escape from Plain City with a win over Fremont Friday to seal their own playoff berth.
The Braves and Wildcats battled in a Thursday night game that was moved from Friday night due to a holiday celebration.
And even though it gave both teams one fewer day to prepare, the battle drew to a tie after the first three quarters.
Bountiful, however, showed their offensive prowess in the final quarter by dropping 22 points in the team’s 11-point win.
Leading the way for Bountiful were a quartet of players including Sam Merrill, Dain Murdock, Brit Harding and Brandon Yates. Merrill scored a team-high 15 points while Murdock added another 11 points. Harding and Brandon Yates each scored nine points in the Braves’ ninth win in Region 6.
Hayden Grant of Woods Cross scored a game-high 19 points, including two 3-pointers, while Mike Jacobson added another 12 in the loss.
Friday night at Viewmont High School, the Vikings moved one step closer to an unblemished Region 2 record as they took down Taylorsville 64-32 to claim their ninth region win.
Having already claimed the region title outright, the Vikings didn’t slow down in their pursuit for region perfection, scoring 27 points in the first half to take an 11-point lead. The Vikings held Taylorsville to just 16 second-half points, while scoring 37 of their own to seal the easy win.
Jarom Tye and Tanner Gamble each finished in double figures in scoring, dropping 17 and 10 points respectively. Haden Heath scored six points while adding seven assists and four rebounds for a solid all-around effort.
As a team, the Vikings’ defense held Taylorsville without a single player scoring in double digits.
At Plain City, the Davis Darts were in a tightly-contested ballgame with the Fremont Silverwolves, having battled to an 18-18 tie after the first half.
The Darts were able to scratch out a five-point lead after the third quarter, however, and were able to keep the game from going into overtime as they held on to a 42-38 win to all but claim either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed in the 5A state tournament.
Davis’ Tyson Denney led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Abel Porter added nine points in the win. Fremont was almost exclusively led by Brock Smith, who had 20 of the team’s total points with 16 rebounds in the loss.
All four south Davis County schools will likely be in the 4A and 5A state playoffs, which start on Monday and Tuesday and will be played at the Maverik Center this year.
The Braves and Vikings will both enter as No. 1 seeds from their respective regions. As of press time, the Davis Darts were the No. 3 seed from Region 1 with the Wildcats ranked as the No. 3 seed in Region 6 with one game remaining.
The Maverik Center is located at 3200 S. Decker Lake Drive in Salt Lake City.
