PLAIN CITY – Before Friday night’s game against Fremont, Davis’s Abel Porter had never scored more than 28 points in any game.
Porter surpassed that total against the Silver Wolves, scoring 34 points on 12-of-19 shooting and helping Davis beat Fremont 70-56.
“He had a huge night,” said Darts coach Jay Welk. “He was tough to guard tonight, and when you throw in his 11 rebounds, it makes it even harder to guard him.”
Porter started the night by scoring 14 points in the first quarter alone, helping Davis to a 21-13 lead. He ended the half with 21 total points and five rebounds.
His shooting success helped Davis get to a 36-27 halftime lead.
“We’re really not surprised by his performance,” said Welk of Porter. “He has that ability. He really wasn’t trying to monopolize the ball either, he was just taking what the defense gave him, and he did a really good job with it.”
Fremont chipped into the Darts’ lead following the third quarter, trimming its deficit from nine to five points after the third quarter. Porter scored nine points in the final quarter, part of a 23-point effort by Davis to close out the game.
“Going on the road, it’s important to go out and take care of business,” said Welk. “Obviously you want to win at home, but if you can break through on the road, it’s a pretty big deal.”
Porter’s wasn’t the only player to finish the game with a double-double. Elijah Kletzli also finished with one, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Matt Morrell was one rebound shy of doing the same, and scored 14 points in the win.
Davis extends its winning streak to 16 games. Fremont has lost two straight and seven of eight region games.
The Darts will face Northridge at Northridge High School Tuesday at 7 p.m.
